The Great, the awful and the ugly: Sugar and Diabetes.

There are so many people worldwide that are affected with diabetes and every year goes higher and higher and the demographics are getting younger too. It’s hard for people to know they have it since the symptoms are often neglected as nothing too serious until it’s too late. But diabetes is a treatable and preventable disease and one way to do it is advocating the diet for diabetics.

Sugar or glucose is the body’s primary source of energy. The problem with diabetes is that it cannot process glucose properly due to the lack of insulin and this leads to very elevated sugar levels in the body and having that much sugar in the body can bring about a lot of health issues. Although insulin injections are very important in treating diabetes, the mainstream management for this disease is not dependent only on one kind of treatment and one of the necessary steps in help curing this disease is the so called diet for diabetics.

A contributor in preventing or delaying diabetes is proper nutrition. One diet plan people recommend is the low glycemic diet. Glycemic index means how much sugar is in a certain food item. So consuming foods with a low glycemic index is beneficial to a diabetic because they do not run the risk of having sugar spikes and can even prevent complications of diabetes like heart disease. But there can be problems with following a diet.

A diabetic diet plan for most diabetics is bland and unappetizing and that is why they tend not to stick to such diets. Especially when people are so busy with jobs and other things, that food preparation is left to the fast food restaurants and the assortment of instant foods in the grocery. But sticking to a diet plan can be made fun and it’s all in the approach. Find recipes that you like and start changing things that can be beneficial for you. This method encourages creativity and can even involve the family. And in time, you can eventually make recipes on your own and can even share that to other people and make their lives healthier too. It’s like hitting two birds with one stone.

It is important to note that as of now, there is no cure for diabetes. But that doesn’t mean that we cannot prevent the disease. We can. Diet is just one aspect in treating and preventing the disease. Simple lifestyle changes can make plenty of differences like stopping smoking, eating healthier, exercising, and limiting consumption of alcohol.

Diabetics can still live a happy normal life. Sacrifices are to be made but everything good thing in life requires that and the payoff is totally worth it.
